Pipe Bursting for Lines That Have Collapsed

Lining works only when there is still a pipe to line. When a cast iron or clay line has crushed, flattened, or pulled apart at the joints, pipe bursting is the better answer. A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe on a cable. It breaks the failed line outward into the surrounding soil and drags a new polyethylene pipe in behind it, all in one pass.

Bursting also lets us go up a size. If your original line was undersized for the building, or a second unit was added years later, this is the moment to correct it.

CIPP Pipe Lining and Epoxy Coating

CIPP lining is the method most homeowners end up choosing. A flexible liner soaked in resin goes into the host pipe, an inflatable bladder presses it tight against the pipe wall, and the resin cures into a new pipe inside the old one. Nothing gets removed and nothing gets hauled away.

Epoxy coating is the lighter version of the same idea. Where the pipe is sound but weeping at hairline cracks or pinholes, a coating seals the interior surface without the thickness of a full liner. Will you dig up my yard at all?

Some digging is needed, but only at the access points, usually at the cleanout and at one end of the damaged section. Your lawn, landscaping, driveway, and hardscape between those points stay where they are.

How do you decide between lining and pipe bursting?

The camera decides it. A pipe that is cracked or leaking but still round and continuous can take a liner inside it. Collapsed, badly offset, or undersized lines call for bursting instead.

Does this work on cast iron and clay pipe?
